Frequently Asked Questions
We know that trying something new can bring up a few questions — especially if you haven’t been to see an osteo before. Here you’ll find answers to some of the most common things people ask about osteopathy, what to expect, and how we can help.
-
Osteopathy is a form of hands-on healthcare that focuses on how the body’s structure and movement support overall health. Using gentle, effective techniques, osteopaths help release tension, restore alignment, and support the body’s natural ability to heal itself.
-
While there’s some overlap, osteopathy takes a whole-body approach — looking at how muscles, joints, nerves, circulation, and posture all work together. Treatment may combine soft-tissue release, joint mobilisation, functional and indirect techniques, and movement advice to help restore balance and function.
-
Osteopaths can help with a wide range of issues, including back and neck pain, headaches, jaw tension, joint pain, sciatica, sports and work injuries, postural imbalances, pregnancy-related discomfort, and more. Treatment can also support recovery after injury, surgery, or illness.
-
Yes. Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession in New Zealand, and we are ACC-registered and fully qualified. We tailor every treatment to your comfort, needs, and health history.
-
Your first appointment is 60 minutes so that we have time to take a full case history, assessment, and provide hands-on treatment. We’ll talk about what’s been bothering you, look at how your body moves, and discuss a plan that suits your needs. You’ll have time to ask questions, and we’ll always work within your comfort level.
-
No, you don’t. We’re ACC-registered providers, so if you’ve had an accident, we can lodge your claim directly with ACC.
-
Wear something comfortable that allows you to move easily — for example, loose-fitting clothing or activewear. Sometimes we’ll need to look at how specific areas move, but your comfort and privacy are always our priority.
-
You might feel a little tender or tired for a day or two as your body adjusts, especially after your first appointment. This is a normal part of the healing process and usually settles quickly. We’ll guide you on what to expect and how to support your recovery.
-
That depends on your condition and overall health. Some people feel relief after one or two sessions, while others with longer-term issues benefit from a short course of treatment. We’ll review your progress and decide together what’s best for you.
-
At this stage, we’re treating children (ages 6 and up) and adults. We can support you through pregnancy and the postpartum period, helping ease postural changes, tension, and discomfort. We hope to offer osteopathic care for babies and younger children soon — and we’ll be sure to keep you posted when that becomes available.
-
Yes. These issues often relate to tension, alignment, or movement restrictions in the head, neck, or upper back. Osteopathic treatment helps improve mobility, ease pressure, and restore balance, often providing significant relief from dizziness, jaw tension, or headaches.
-
Yes. Osteopathy is gentle, adaptable, and safe for most people, including those with arthritis, autoimmune conditions, or long-term pain. We always tailor treatment to your comfort and needs.
-
Absolutely. Stress often shows up in the body as tightness, shallow breathing, or headaches. Osteopathic treatment can help release physical strain, improve breathing and circulation, and calm the nervous system — supporting both body and mind.

Osteopathy can be very helpful in supporting recovery after surgery or trauma — by improving circulation, reducing swelling, and gently restoring movement. We will always work within what’s safe and appropriate for your stage of healing.
